Found as a mutation by J. Bennett Saunders at Saunders Brothers Inc., Piney River, Virginia, and introduced by NewGen® Boxwood, Saunders Genetics LLC.

NewGen Freedom® was selected due to its better resistance to Boxwood Blight and resistance to Boxwood Leafminer. The habit is more uniform and tighter than ‘Wintergreen’ or ‘Winter Gem’. NewGen Freedom is a relatively vigorous, rounded cultivar that is slightly taller than wide, with beautiful glossy medium green foliage — perfect for formal plantings or as a specimen. Its vigor helps create an attractive plant quicker than many cultivars but also makes annual pruning a must. Deer resistant. Prefers full sun. Zones 5–8.
