Midnight Express™ boasts velvety-looking, deep burgundy foliage which stands out amongst other dark leaved redbuds as it has more upright habit, produces a straighter trunk, and is a faster grower with darker color than Forest Pansy. A one-year-old tree liner of Midnight Express is approximately the same height and caliper as a two year Forest Pansy, making it a more profitable redbud to grow. Its color is as dark or darker than Black Pearl. From a northern seed source, it is hardy too. It has the typical pink, pea shaped spring blooms to compliment the healthy foliage and appealing shape, and has a straighter trunk. Reaches 20–30 feet tall and 10–20 feet wide. Zones 5–9.
