Marilyn’s Choice™ Magnolia
Magnolia cylindrica ‘MJK-MC1’ US PPAF Marilyn’s Choice™
Discovered by Mark and Jolly Krautmann in the yard of a friend 15 years after donating a seedling to a school benefit auction. Introduced by Heritage Seedlings & Liners
Precocious flowering – it has bloomed in its first spring after bud propagation in a #1 pot, most often in the second year. Attractive summer foliage in the growing season, unblemished by mildew, aphids, mites, or other pests during evaluations over the past 20 years from Oregon to South Carolina, where varieties like ‘Galaxy’ have P&D issues. Tight branch angles and modest stem growth rate keep the flowers compactly set on the tree frame. The tree experienced zero ice damage in the devastating Willamette Valley ice storm of 2021. Blooms emerge weeks before the foliage (late March in Oregon), but late enough to avoid major frost events with dependable annual flowering. No messy seed pods on the 20-year-old original tree. Ready for retail sale 1 year after transplanting into #3-5 from #1 pots.
Available as #1 1–2-foot, #1 2–3-foot, and #1 3–4-foot liners from Heritage Seedlings & Liners (Booth 9037).
