Pruning Demo. Because many new clematis species are used in hybridization, and because clematis are now used in innovative ways, the conversation about pruning must change. In the wild clematis are pruned only by their genetics, the weather and natural catastrophes. They romp over shrubs and mingle on the ground where no vertical temptation is available. They wander, painting the landscape with form and color. Shouldn’t we grow them the way they grow themselves?
