SUMMARY:The Value Proposition of Beneficial Microbes
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Michael Brownbridge\, Ph.D.\, senior technical services manager\, BioWorks Inc. \nSpanish Translation \nBiofungicides are increasingly utilized in integrated disease-management programs. They bring proven efficacy and performance\, are safe for and compatible with other components of integrated pest management (IPM)\, and have unique modes of action which is essential for resistance management. But what else can these biological materials do for your plants? Not only do some Bacillus\, Streptomyces and Trichoderma species colonize and protect roots from diseases\, they also provide plant health benefits that promote plant resilience and performance. In this talk\, we will examine some of the other attributes of microbials\, how they can be used to sustain the performance and resilience of plants through the year\, and how they deliver value in nursery production systems.

SUMMARY:Sustainability in Horticulture: Virtue Signaling or Affecting Change?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Benjamin Hoover\, Ph.D.\, associate professor of sustainable nursery production\, Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) \nSustainability is a common topic in horticulture. Often actions and efforts to address sustainability miss the mark. Making good decisions starts with identifying what we mean when we talk about sustainability. In this session we will cover how horticulture fits into the environment and society\, then examine how the decisions about staffing\, structures\, substrates\, containers\, packaging\, irrigation\, fertilizers\, and crop selection influence sustainability. Then we ask the hard question: are we making good decisions?

SUMMARY:Native Plants\, Cultivars\, and Sustainability: Selecting the Genes that Fit Your Design
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Benjamin Hoover\, associate professor of sustainable nursery production\, Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) \nWe know that selecting the right plant for a landscape is important\, but how do we judge plants? Should we focus on native plants or the newest cultivars? In this session\, we will talk about cultivars and plant species. The conversation involves genetic outliers and mutations\, grafted plants\, plant adaptations to stresses\, and how they might affect landscape performance. Plants are diverse and they have a lot to offer; we just need to know how to pick the right fit.

SUMMARY:Developing a Biological Control Strategy that Works for You
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Karen Stever\, Ph.D.\, GGSPro technical specialist\, Griffin Greenhouse Supplies \nPESTICIDE CLASS- SPANISH TRANSLATION\nSuccess with biological pest control requires developing a strategy that accounts for the nature of the crops being grown\, environmental conditions\, and expected pests. Another important element of developing an effective biocontrol strategy is defining what success means. For many\, maintaining a target pest pressure threshold without solely relying on\, or even eliminating\, the use of pesticides is the primary goal. Stever will discuss a bi-weekly preventative approach which can serve as a program for a grower using biological control agents (BCAs) for the first time\, or as an effective base plan that can be tailored to a wide variety of crop situations.

SUMMARY:Key to Mitigate Climate Change Lies Hidden Beneath Our Feet: A Win-Win for Horticulture
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mike Amaranthus\, Ph.D. President MycoAnalytics LLC\, Adjunct Associate Professor Oregon State University \nSoils serve as tremendous storehouses of the Earth’s carbon\, and even a small change in the percent carbon in the soil can significantly impact the maintenance of the Earth’s atmosphere. Up to 36% of the annual global carbon emissions are estimated to be stored in the soil’s mycorrhizal mycelial network. In horticulture systems\, there is significant potential for generating a mycelium network on millions of plants and acres. We must manage our relationship with soil and horticulture to produce the plants we need while simultaneously increasing soil fertility\, plant quality and by incorporating carbon into the ground. It’s a win-win for horticulture.

SUMMARY:Advancing Boxwood Blight Monitoring Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Luisa Santamaria\, Ph.D.\, Professor\, Extension Plant Pathologist\, Oregon State University \nBoxwood plants\, which are widely utilized in gardening and landscaping\, are seriously threatened by boxwood blight\, which is caused by the fungus Calonectria pseudonaviculata. For disease management\, prompt detection and efficient monitoring are essential. With the intention of improving the effectiveness of boxwood blight detection\, this talk explores important aspects to consider while monitoring. We investigate ways to improve observation methods by looking at symptomatology\, cultural practices\, and environmental factors. In the end\, an effective boxwood blight scouting strategy will help with the early diagnosis\, mitigation\, and preservation of boxwood landscapes as well as the production of healthy plants.

SUMMARY:Nursery Science Summit: Plant Pathology
DESCRIPTION:   \nSpeaker 1: Jay W. Pscheidt\, Ph.D.\, Extension Plant Pathology Specialist\, Oregon State University\nTitle: Smart Spraying Grapes Leads to New Boxwood Blight Management \nDescription: Oregon has been on the cutting-edge evaluating sensor assisted applications of pesticides for several years. These machines work well with systemic pesticides but need simple adjustments to use contact materials correctly. All sprayers have trouble delivering pesticides to the interior of a tight boxwood canopy. Drenching systemic fungicides can overcome this distribution issue with the potential to manage diseases such as boxwood blight. \nSpeaker 2: Niklaus Grunwald\, Ph.D.\, Research Plant Pathologist\, USDA-Agricultural Research Service\nTitle: Research Updates on Diagnostic Tools for Plant Pathogens Affecting Ornamental Crops \nDescription: In this session USDA scientist Nik Grunwald will present research updates on the genus Phytophthora. Phytophthora pathogens are some of the most devastating pathogens known to agriculture. He is pioneering novel approaches to monitor and diagnose plant pathogens. His focus is on the sudden oak death pathogen Phytophthora ramorum. \nSpeaker 3: Jerry Weiland\, Ph.D.\, Research Plant Pathologist\, USDA-Agricultural Research Service\nTitle: Nursery Plant Disease Research Highlights from the USDA-ARS Weiland Lab \nDescription: In this session\, plant disease expert Jerry Weiland will describe how his USDA-ARS research program serves Oregon’s nursery industry and highlight key outcomes from his research on Phytophthora root rot and boxwood blight. \nSpeaker 4: Luisa Santamaria\, Ph.D.\, Professor\, Extension Plant Pathologist\, Oregon State University

SUMMARY:I Will Always Love You: Creating and Increasing Market Relevance
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Lloyd Traven\, President/CEO\, Peace Tree Farm LLC \nFor years we lamented as an industry about needing a national marketing campaign\, that national spokesperson or message\, but never pulled the trigger. It took a pandemic to realize we didn’t really need one. The consumer was always searching for us\, but we were not putting ourselves in the places they were looking! We have become undeniably relevant and overwhelmingly popular since the beginning of the pandemic disturbance\, but we cannot allow ourselves to just go back to “the way it used to be” because the pressure is lighter. Inflation\, polarization\, and changed market dynamics make that impossible. Peace Tree Farm founder Lloyd Traven shares his frank observations and advice about how to stay relevant and why it’s critical to the industry.
