SUMMARY:The Value Proposition of Beneficial Microbes
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Michael Brownbridge\, Ph.D.\, senior technical services manager\, BioWorks Inc. \nSpanish Translation \nBiofungicides are increasingly utilized in integrated disease-management programs. They bring proven efficacy and performance\, are safe for and compatible with other components of integrated pest management (IPM)\, and have unique modes of action which is essential for resistance management. But what else can these biological materials do for your plants? Not only do some Bacillus\, Streptomyces and Trichoderma species colonize and protect roots from diseases\, they also provide plant health benefits that promote plant resilience and performance. In this talk\, we will examine some of the other attributes of microbials\, how they can be used to sustain the performance and resilience of plants through the year\, and how they deliver value in nursery production systems.

SUMMARY:Key to Mitigate Climate Change Lies Hidden Beneath Our Feet: A Win-Win for Horticulture
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mike Amaranthus\, Ph.D. President MycoAnalytics LLC\, Adjunct Associate Professor Oregon State University \nSoils serve as tremendous storehouses of the Earth’s carbon\, and even a small change in the percent carbon in the soil can significantly impact the maintenance of the Earth’s atmosphere. Up to 36% of the annual global carbon emissions are estimated to be stored in the soil’s mycorrhizal mycelial network. In horticulture systems\, there is significant potential for generating a mycelium network on millions of plants and acres. We must manage our relationship with soil and horticulture to produce the plants we need while simultaneously increasing soil fertility\, plant quality and by incorporating carbon into the ground. It’s a win-win for horticulture.

SUMMARY:Advancing Boxwood Blight Monitoring Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Luisa Santamaria\, Ph.D.\, Professor\, Extension Plant Pathologist\, Oregon State University \nBoxwood plants\, which are widely utilized in gardening and landscaping\, are seriously threatened by boxwood blight\, which is caused by the fungus Calonectria pseudonaviculata. For disease management\, prompt detection and efficient monitoring are essential. With the intention of improving the effectiveness of boxwood blight detection\, this talk explores important aspects to consider while monitoring. We investigate ways to improve observation methods by looking at symptomatology\, cultural practices\, and environmental factors. In the end\, an effective boxwood blight scouting strategy will help with the early diagnosis\, mitigation\, and preservation of boxwood landscapes as well as the production of healthy plants.
