The gift shop is becoming an important profit center and differentiator for the independent garden center. Setting themselves apart from competitors, more garden centers are finding that the right mix of product and merchandising can help sustain the business through slower months.

In 2010, the Farwest Show will introduce the Garden Center Pavilion, featuring vendors selling giftware and related products specifically to garden centers. The pavilion will serve as a destination for independent garden centers, creating a wellrounded experience for their buyers. This is an order-writing show, not a cash and carry event.

MINI-WORKSHOPS

The pavilion will also offer short "how-to" demonstrations throughout show hours to enhance giftware and plant merchandising expertise and other aspects of a retail nursery. Topics include how color influences consumer buying habits, five ways to develop a focal point in your gift shop and creating free displays that sell, appealing to a new and emerging customer base and best practices for capitalizing on veggies and herbs.

The Farwest Show Experience

"As an owner and retail manager, when I go to a trade show I want to see the latest and greatest products for the next year and purchase it while I'm there, seeing it in person. I feel more comfortable buying the product when I can see the actual size and quality rather than in a catalog."

-Brian Bauman,
Bauman's Farm & Garden
